Brightness description using different metrics

چکیده
In 1924 CIE defined the V(λ) function to describe the “relative visibility”. It was soon realised that this was not a right description for brightness. During the seven decades that passed by, several attempts were made to describe brightness for monochromatic, less saturated and near white lights. Among the near-white light descriptions the approach by Haubner [1] is the best-known. For monochromatic lights CIE TC 1-30 suggests spectral brightness efficiency functions [2] (and spectral luminous efficiency functions), an earlier CIE Research Note proposed for trial a brightness matching model [3] intended mainly for VDU colours. During the past decade Hunt [4] and Nayatani and coworkers [5] developed models to describe colour appearance with a brightness axis. The present work deals with the comparison of the different brightness descriptions and investigates whether the colour appearance model by Hunt could be used also to describe photometric brightness or not. Finally we point out a discrepancy when mesopic brightness descriptions [6] are derived from photopic and scotopic luminosity functions: the photopic luminosity function correlates with visual acuity, flicker and distinctness of boarder related perceptions well, while the V’(λ)-function is brightens related, leading to the amalgamation of two different phenomena. A real mesopic brightness description should start from one of the photopic brightness descriptions and the V’(λ) based “luminance”.

A Study on Histogram Equalization for MRI Brain Image Enhancement
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain is a precious tool to facilitate physician’s diagnoses and care for a mixture of brain diseases including stroke, cancer, and epilepsy. It presents exact information to discover the diseases. Histogram equalization is one of the important steps in image enhancement technique for MRI. This paper compares different methods like Brightness Preserving B...
متن کاملContrast Enhancement of Ultrasound Image of Knee Joint Cartilage by Using Multipurpose Beta Optimized Recursive Bi-Histogram Equalization Method
Multipurpose Beta Optimized Recursive Bi-histogram Equalization (MBORBHE) method has been proposed in this article for contrast enhancement of US image. Histogram equalization (HE) is very popular for contrast enhancement. But conventional HE methods do not consider brightness and detail preservation simultaneously during contrast enhancement of US image. In case of our proposed method brightne...
متن کاملContrast Enhancement Using Bi-Histogram Equalization With Brightness Preservation
Contrast enhancement is an important factor in the image preprocessing step. One of the widely accepted contrast enhancement method is the histogram equalization. Although histogram equalization achieves comparatively better performance on almost all types of image, global histogram equalization sometimes produces excessive visual deterioration. A new extension of bi-histogram equalization call...
متن کاملClassification of hydrometeors using microwave brightness temperature data from AMSU-B over Iran
The Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-B (AMSU-B) installed on the NOAA-15, 16, and 17 satellites, is the new generation of a series of microwave imagers/sounders that can sense atmospheric moisture and other hydrometeors through clouds. This paper demonstrates the potential of multi-frequency AMSU-B data for classifying different types of hydrometeors. Ten types of these hydrometers have been co...
متن کاملSpeckle reduction with attenuation compensation for Skin OCT images enhancement
The enhancement of skin image in optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging can help dermatologists to investigate tissue layers more accurately, hence the more efficient diagnosis. In this paper, we propose an image enhancement technique including speckle reduction, attenuation compensation and cleaning to improve the quality of OCT skin images. A weighted median filter is designed to reduce t...
